About wheel.me

At wheel.me we build robotics infrastructure from the ground up, combining custom hardware, embedded systems, real-time robotics software, and cloud-based management tools. Our core innovation, Genius, is the world’s first autonomous wheel, transforming ordinary equipment into intelligent mobile robots that operate safely and efficiently in real-world environments. Designed and manufactured in Norway, our systems are deployed to customers worldwide.

wheel.me has built the world's first autonomous wheel, a technology that transforms ordinary trolleys and transport equipment into self-driving robots. With robots running autonomously at customer sites across Europe and a global partner network of close to 40 partners, the company is now entering a new phase: scaling the platform to support the next generation of the product and a rapidly growing commercial footprint.

To take the platform to the next level, wheel.me is now hiring a Software Architect. You will own the technical direction of the full on-robot software stack, from embedded and OS layers through the robotics application and up to the cloud interface. This is a hands-on role where you stay close to the code, contribute production code at every layer, and sit at the centre of the most consequential technical decisions the company will make over the next few years.

What you will do

  • Own and evolve the on-robot software architecture across all layers, keeping it modular and adaptable as the product scales.
  • Maintain the architecture roadmap, translating technical vision into clear priorities for the team.
  • Define and govern the interfaces between the robot and the wider platform, covering APIs, telemetry, data flow and software lifecycle.
  • Set and uphold architectural principles for scalability, performance, observability and fault tolerance, and mentor the team in applying them.
  • Stay hands-on by prototyping, validating interfaces and contributing production code at every layer.
  • Lead design reviews and cross-team discussions and make sure decisions are communicated and followed through.
  • Help the team think architecturally, share what you know and keep a high bar for quality.

What we are looking for

Must have

  • Strong C++ fundamentals. This is the primary language across the stack.
  • Systems-level thinking from embedded to cloud, with the ability to reason across the full stack and make trade-offs you can defend.
  • Experience designing software that runs in production: tested, reliable and documented.
  • The communication skills to explain technical decisions to engineers, product owners and leadership, in terms each audience understands.
  • The confidence to make architectural calls under uncertainty, and the humility to listen when others see something you have missed.

Nice to have

There is a lot of useful experience in this space: robotics middleware such as ROS, OTA update systems, Linux at OS level, embedded systems, safety-critical software. We know the right candidate is unlikely to have depth in all of it. What matters more is that you are the kind of person who enjoys learning what you need to do the job well.

Who you are

You enjoy owning the full picture. You are comfortable stepping into a codebase that has grown organically, finding what matters, and setting a direction others can follow. You get energy from helping a capable team think more architecturally, not from solving everything yourself. Previous experience with the Software Architect title is not a requirement. What matters is that you have taken responsibility for consequential technical decisions, lived with the results, and learned from both.

Practical details

Location: Oslo. On-site presence is expected, with flexibility for focused remote work.
